somatic breathwork SESSIONS

Somatic Breath Therapy is a specific body-mind therapy that utilizes conscious, connected breathing (no pause between inhale and exhale) intentionally.  By breathing diaphragmatically in this connected fashion (sometimes called circular breathing), breathwork as a therapeutic tool can affect the physical aspects of our bodies and the emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies.  By learning how to breathe an open, healthy, and connected breath, our bodies naturally begin to release physical tension and surface levels of stress. Then, as our bodies and our breath deepen and we learn to relax the exhalation, more deeply-held physical, emotional, and mental patterns are released as well.

Each breath session begins with an in-depth, hour-long conversation to establish rapport and the clients' concerns. Then a physical demonstration of what we do and a detailed explanation of possible outcomes follows.

A breathwork session starts with what is called the breath dance. The breath dance is simply some aerobic movement used to get the breath going. Additional benefits include physical exercise, and client self-awareness. Then the client will typically lie down or sit slightly propped up and diaphragmatically breathe a circular breath. Once the breath is activated clients transition into an ASC (altered state of consciousness) and the body/mind comes to the fore. Often release will occur which can present in a variety of ways, from physical shaking or discomfort, to crying, laughing, and yawning. Resistance to letting go is typical and the facilitator's job is to help the client feel safe enough to allow the energy to move. Waves of energy movement occur throughout this portion of the session. The final stage of a breathwork session, called integration, occurs when the client lets go of the circular breath and relaxes. The physical body experiences either a deep letting go, as if they are 'asleep', or they may have visions of those who have passed, memories of themselves, or a transcendent experience. Insight and self-awareness are common and the nervous system has an opportunity to reset. Over time the reset becomes the norm and clients let go of their current perception and beliefs that are holding them back.

Somatic breathwork is rooted in the work of Stanslov Grof (Holotropic Breathwork) and Leonard Orr (Rebirthing Breathwork) but has more in depth hands-on facilitation
