About Wendy McKenzie

My connection to clay began in a pottery class in 1981. Of course, in the world’s sea of potters, I am simply a drop of experience. There are many others with in-depth technical experience, more clay and glaze mixing experience, and substantial firing experience. I have never had aspirations of being known for the pots I make, but having practiced throwing for over 35 years, I see myself as a skilled thrower. I know the commitment and rhythm needed to make a nice pot. Production potters aspire to fifty of the same mug in an hour for example. The rhythm of production is meditative, with the flowing repetition of the same hand movements combined with the same amount of pressure. It is a practice in seeing, feeling and intending.

My professional journey began in 1999 when I founded The Voice of Clay, initially a home pottery studio created out of necessity as a single mother of two young children. Throwing pots became both my livelihood and my grounding practice. As I taught others, I noticed a consistent pattern: people left class feeling calmer, more centered, more whole. This sparked a deeper inquiry into clay’s therapeutic properties. In 2007, I trained in Clay Bath Therapy with Lauana Lei (LL’s Magnetic Clay/Enviromedica), learning about clay’s ability to draw toxins from the body through its negative ionic charge. I later earned my Esthetics License through the Institute of Skin Science in New Hampshire and spent over a decade offering clay wraps, foot soaks, baths, and Dr. Hauschka holistic facials, fully immersing people in the healing power of clay.

Today, I lead The Voice of Clay and the nonprofit Clay Cultural Center in Brookline, NH, where we honor clay as a connector of disciplines and people. I teach, write, and conduct research on the resonance and healing properties of clay minerals. My work now includes a forthcoming book (Clay in the Kitchen), a research study on clay’s energetic signatures using tools like EAV and PIP photography, and an online course for integrative practitioners exploring the practical and spiritual applications of many healing clays.

I don’t see clay as material—it’s relational. It asks for presence, humility, and curiosity. It mirrors back to us what needs centering. And it continues to shape me, as I shape it, in collaboration with the elements and the Mystery that moves through us all.
